Full multi-disciplinary engineering design services and contract management
This significant project in Christchurch called for the full works and WSP Opus’ multi-disciplinary team was well placed to provide it.
WSP Opus provided full multi-disciplinary engineering design services and contract management for this significant infrastructure project.
This project involved a main substation and comprised four transformers totalling 3.5 MVA; HV switchboards including connection to the hospital’s HV ring main system; and two of the three main HV incomers from the local distribution network.
We installed a new LV switchboard incorporating all switchgear and controls, final sub main distribution and Power Factor Correction. A Schneider Prisma Plus board system with disconnectable chassis modules allows for future additions to the final distribution without disruption of existing loads.
This was one of the first and most significant projects in New Zealand to incorporate the new Schneider equipment within the design. It includes withdrawable ACBs and NSX breakers with integrated energy monitoring.
We increased metering points within the substation (HV and LV) from 4 to 29, making consumption for all submains, and power flow from essential and non essential buses, fully visible. This enabled the hospital to optimise generator loading for peak lopping and exporting during periods of high network demand and spot price.
We designed and installed an alternative transformer configuration to allow for future transformer changes and maintenance without significant disruption. The new 1100 kVA Caterpillar generator we installed enables essential backup and export, and we provided external generator connections for extra back-up. The team also upgraded major sub mains to the nearby services buildings and boiler house.

- 50,000 litre underground diesel storage tank for the generator set
A Woodward EasyGen 3200 generator controller provides backup and export modes. BMS controls now monitor and control the mechanical plant, and loads and energy use for each building. Our team also facilitated resource consent for the new generator, underground diesel storage tank and stormwater sediment management.
